Mizgajski Wins Wexford Cycling Championships

By July 31, 2012 Race Reports

Martin Mizgajski took his first win in the Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers colours last weekend as he soloed to victory in the 2012 Wexford Cycling Championships.

The race, which was held in Bunclody and promoted by the South East Road Club, was dominated by a 12man break-away that went clear in the early part of the 75km event.  This group contained many of the pre-race favourites including the Carrick Wheelers duo of Martin Mizgajski and Paul Flynn.  Both these riders were eligible to compete in the championships as Mizgajski resides in New Ross and Flynn is a Wexford native born and bred.

As the race entered the final 15km, it was Mizgajski who began attacking from this leading break-away group, in an effort to distance the defending champion David Walsh of Slaney Cycling Club.  Mizgajski’s repeated attacks eventually paid dividend, as with about 7km remaining, he broke away from the rest of the leading riders and showed his impressive strength to solo all the way to the finishing line with an amazing one and a half minutes to spare over second placed Walsh, with Declan Kinch of Slipstream CC finishing third.

Leading home the remainder of the break-away was Carrick Wheelers sprint specialist Paul Flynn who finished just outside the medals in fourth position.

Mizgajski, originally from Poland, made the move to Ireland in 2004 where he competed on the triathlon scene for a number of years before taking up cycling at a more serious level in 2008.  He then joined the renowned Carrick Wheelers Club last winter in an effort to take his cycling to another height and competed well in Ireland’s top international events, such as Rás Mumhan, where he impressively placed 4th on the stage that finished on top of the Conor Pass in Kerry, and the An Post Rás, where he was part of the Iverk Produce Tipperary Team that placed second county team overall.

Mizgajski has enjoyed a reasonably successful debut season as part of the famous Carrick Wheelers club and some even bigger results for the talented cyclist are clearly on the horizon.
