Round 4 of the Ó Ceallachains Beginners and Underage Cycling League was held in truly testing conditions on Monday evening. The competitors had to deal with driving rain from start to finish. But as the saying goes “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”. Nobody typified this more than Sean Hahessy from Tannersgate in Carrick who moved from last to first during the course of the race.
Sean started more than 10 minutes behind the first rider in the 3 lap race, but battled superbly to pick off riders one by one to win by 33 seconds from Portlaw’s Kyle Crotty. Tomás Lacey was third on the night, overhauling the impressive Clodagh O’ Donnell in the last kilometre.
In the one lap race, Elizabeth O’ Donnell got the better of Conor Murphy in a thrilling sprint finish, followed by Jack Conroy and Niamh O’ Loughlin. Condidering the atrocious conditions, it was great to see 20 competitors braving the elements.
With two races to go, just 3 points separate the first four riders overall in the 3 lap event. Clodagh O’ Donnell leads on 45 points, followed by Sean Hahessy (44), Tomás Lacey (43) and Kyle Crotty (42). It’s even closer in the one lap race with Elizabeth Moloney and Jack Conroy tied on 54 points at the top of the leaderboard. Next are Conor Murphy (44), Conal O’ Sullivan (43), Killian McHale and Andrew Butler (both 36 points).
With 20 points for the win and the best four scores counting, a lot of riders can still win. Tonight (Monday 7th June) is the penultimate round of the league with the final race and prizegiving coinciding with National Bike Week.
