The final event of the six week Ó Ceallachains League for young cyclists was run off in ideal conditions on Monday evening. Two new faces emerged on top of the podium on the night, but the overall result saw those on top of the leaderboard holding on to secure outright victories.

The one lap event saw Kilsheelan’s Killian McHale lead home newcomer Aaron Aylward, with Niamh O’ Loughlin in third place. Conor Murphy and Jack Hickey were fourth and fifth. The expected showdown between Jack Conroy and Elizabeth Moloney failed to materialise, as Elizabeth unfortunately had a mechanical problem. Jack came home in sixth position followed by Andrew Butler and Annie Dowling.

This meant that Jack Conroy secured overall victory on 74 points, with Elizabeth Moloney second on 70 and Niamh O’ Loughlin third with 64 points. Jack has improved weekly, always keeping pace with the handicapper, and is a worthy winner.

The three lap event was dominated from start to finish by Cillian Power. One of the youngest riders in the race, Cillian always recorded fast times for the first two laps, but struggled on the final lap. However, on Monday it was clear that all of the training he and his brother Conor have been doing is paying dividends as he maintained a blistering pace to win by 45 seconds from Richard Dunphy and Bill Brennan. Scott Bennett was fourth, ahead of Kyle Crotty and Conor Power.

Despite finishing ninth on the night, Sean Hahessy had enough points in the bag to secure overall victory. The Gaelcholáiste Chéitinn student proved to be the strongest on the first night time trial, recording a lap time for the 2.2 miles of 5 minutes 39 seconds. The only bikes that have done that faster in Faugheen have had petrol engines!

In second place overall was Portlaw’s Kyle Crotty with Clodagh O’ Donnell in third position. Tomás Lacey, Scott Bennett and Michael O’ Loughlin were fourth, fifth and sixth. All competitors received trophies from our sponsor Brian O’ Callaghan of Ó Ceallacháins Bar and Bistro. The really encouraging thing about this year’s league is the large number of young cyclists who have taken out racing licences.

Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers would like to thank all of those who gave up their time to officiate at the event, the parents and supporters who came out in droves and the riders who gave their all each Monday night; sometimes in very nasty weather. Thanks to our sponsors Ó Ceallacháins and also the South Tipperary Sports Partnership who also supported us. We hope to see you all in Faugheen next year!
