Club officials worried that they may have to postpone a second event today as gale force winds hit South Tipperary. The evening saw slightly calmer conditions, so we decided to go ahead. Club coach Martin O’ Loughlin gave instructions on how to ride safely in windy conditions. A minute’s silence in honour of our late handicapper and timekeeper Bobby Power was impeccably observed by all present.
A record 31 girls and boys signed on. Newcomers Thomas Parle, Luke Dunne, Liam Kelly and Shay Butler were the first four home in the one lap race, followed by former winner Jack Hickey and Roisín Dunphy.
Michael O’ Loughlin made light of the conditions and overturned a handicap in excess of one minute per mile to go from last to first in the 3 lap race. Niall Dempsey nearly held out for the win, but Michael caught him on the last time through the village. Dean Wall made a very impressive debut to finish 3rd and impressed a lot of seasoned judges of cycling talent with his fluid pedalling style. Aaron Kearney, Tomás Lacey and Aaron Aylward rounded out the top 6.
With 4 more events to go, the handicap system will give a fair chance to all riders to perform in the coming weeks. So, Faugheen at 7pm is the place to be.
