Carrick Wheelers cyclist Hugh Mulhearne put in an impressive performance this week at the 2011 UCI Track Cycling Masters World Championships, held at the Manchester Velodrome.
Mulhearne who was representing Ireland in the 35 – 39yrs Men’s Individual 3km Pursuit, posted a time of 3mins 40secs for the event which was good enough for 9th place, with a time of 3mins 33secs being good enough for a bronze medal.
Mulhearne cited his inexperience on a velodrome such as the steeply banked wooden one of Manchester as being a disadvantage that cost him a number of seconds over the event. The Irish rider rode the bends slightly higher than his seasoned track competitors, thus losing about half second a lap to those rivals over the 12 lap event.
Nevertheless, the Carrick Wheelers man was delighted with his participation in the event describing it as the “most intense thing I’ve ever done on a bike” and after a successful 2011 season with domestic wins and participating in a world championship event, lets hope Mulhearne continues to perform at such high standards for 2012!
