Carrick Wheelers CC held their 57th AGM this week. The meeting was a largely positive affair with both Chairman and Secretary highlighting the impressive results and successful promotions achieved by the club over the past 12 months. A touch of sadness came over those in attendance however, when recently deceased club members Bobby Power, Pat Nugent and Barry Curran were paid tribute to in such a fitting manor by the chair.
2011 was indeed another successful year in Carrick Wheelers history as the club promoted many events including two open races, namely, The Tommy Sheehan Memorial and The Carrick Wheelers Cup, The Under-age League, a six-week cycling league for young cyclists in the area, as well as the inaugural Carrick Wheelers Challenge Sportive. The club was also involved in the running of events such as The Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford and the IPT’s Bobby Power Commemorative Cycle, an annual fundraiser that raises money to bring children with special needs to Lourdes.
In addition to successfully promoting many cycling events, the club members accomplished many positive results and victories throughout the country.
Michael O’Loughlin dominated the U14 domestic racing calendar this year winning all of Ireland’s major under-age events and Sean Hahassey also had two wins in the U16 Category.
Our senior riders also claimed many victories during the competitive 2011 season with Martin O’Loughlin collecting the club’s first senior win of the year with his victory in The Coombes Connor Memorial (Drogheda), back in March before adding The Emyvale GP to his overflowing CV in May. Hugh Mulhearne had another impressive year with the club winning The Christy McManus Memorial Trophy (Bray), The Munster TT Championships, The Dungarvan Cycle Sports Trophy and The Betty D’Arcy Memorial (Wexford), as well as achieving an remarkable 9th in the World Masters Track Championships 4km Pursuit, held at the Manchester Velodrome. Paul Flynn also went from strength to strength this year winning the Altitude Summer Series Cycling League in Waterford as well as a couple of wins in 3rd Category races that lead to his promotion to the next tier of competition for the 2012 season.
Bobby Sheehan then went onto what was perhaps to most exciting announcement of the meeting as he revealed that the club had secured a lucrative three year sponsorship deal with local fruit and vegetable company Iverk Produce, news that was obviously happily received by the floor of the meeting. The Chairmen commended the club’s ability to attract sponsorship over the past thirty years with Iverk Produce following in the footsteps of the nationally recognised soft drink brand Cidona who sponsored the club for over twenty years, and more recently Dan Morrissey Ltd, principally a road building company, who sponsored the Carrick outfit for almost a decade.
Finally the incoming committee were elected (see below), and all present were truly in agreement that 2012 was shaping up be an exciting year!
