In the week where Iverk produce Carrick Wheelers members, old and new won stages of the An Post Rás, 33 stars of the future signed on for week 2 of the beginners & underage league. This hugely popular league is made possible by the generous sponsorship of Ó Ceallacháin’s Bar & Bistro Carrick-on Suir and support of the South Tipperary Sports Partnership.
3 girls and 3 boys took to the line in the 1 lap event. After a closely fought race it was Nathan Huntenberg who just edged out Chloe Hawkins and Conor Hogan for the win. They were followed closely home by Christopher Maher, Aoife Hickey and Caoimhe Flynn. Well done to all.
The 3 lap race was a much more tactical affair and the riders rode hard to make the most of the time handicaps given to them on the night. The scratch group of 2 Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers riders and 2 Clonmel CC riders really went for it from the gun.
Despite the large contingent of Comeragh CC riders working well together, it was this group of 4 who set out on the bell lap in front. Strong riding on the back of the circuit by the ‘Carrick’ duo saw them shed the Clonmel men. Coming up the finishing straight it was Portlaw’s Aaron Kearney who was in pole position, tucked in on the wheel of Mallow’s Ruairí Dunne. In an exciting sprint finish it was Aaron Kearny who just managed to get the better of Ruairí Dunne on the line. All in all a very exciting race and some very strong riding by all the groups.
Result of the 3 lap race:
- Aaron Kearney Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers
- Ruairí Dunne Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers
- Cathal Purcell Clonmel CC
- Ronan Charters Clonmel CC
- James Nugent Unattached
The league runs for the next 5 Monday nights, starting at 7PM. New riders are always welcome. All that is needed is any type of roadworthy bike and a helmet.
