This your opportunity t(o learn how to ride a fixed wheel (no brakes) track bike on a banked velodrome safely. Our coaches are very experienced in taking complete novices through to a competent level over the period of the ‘Accreditation’ session. This ‘Track Accreditation’ is a prerequisite for participation in regular training sessions or racing and – is done in a safe, steady, controlled but progressive manner and when completed you will be able to ride a track bike in a manner which ensures your own safety and the safety of of other track users.
People get hung up on the fact that the bikes have no brakes, but all the bikes on the track will be the same, and it is very much akin to driving on a motorway. Everyone is moving and you don’t change direction without looking. There are other rules as to how and when you move and we will explain them in more detail on the day. Track bikes are available for hire (€5 – youth €2). Our bikes are fitted with either Look Delta (old type) or Rat Trap (straps). It is essential that cleats are in good condition and if using your own pedals that the retention is turned up to the max. MTB(XPDs) are not suitable for use on the track. This session can be done on a one day licence, but the minimum requirement thereafter is Track, or Full Racing Licence. IVCA Racing licence also acceptable. We have never failed to teach anyone within the allotted time and you will surprise yourself on the level of competency you will achieve during the session. Ask anyone who have undergone this training!
If you can’t make it on the day, there will be a further Accreditation on the following Saturday. Thereafter, accreditatiions will be run only on the first Saturday and 3rd Friday of each month. Check www.trackcycling.ie for exact dates. We are cutting back on the number of these sessions in the hope that we can deal with more riders per session and leave the Saturdays clear to develop the skill levels of all our recently accredited and experienced riders.
Our Track League at Sundrive will then commence on Wednesday 5th May.
