This year’s National Bike Week is from 13th to the 20th June, and in the lead up to it the Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers club are promoting a beginners and under age over the next six weeks, with the final race and prize presentations during the Bike Week on June 14th . This year the club has gratefully received support from South Tipperary Sports Partnership who are aiming to get as many people as possible on bikes for National Bike Week, and with the continued sponsorship by O’Ceallacháins Bistro of Main St., Carrick on Suir of the league, the club are hoping it will be bigger and better than ever.
This will be the third annual promotion of this league by Carrick Wheelers, and will again be open to boys and girls aged from 10 to 16 years of age. Based on a flat two mile circuit in the village of Faugheen just outside the town, there will be a one lap race and a three lap race each week for the young cyclists depending on their age and ability. The league will be on a points system, with an adjusting time handicap each week depending on times and results, so everyone has a chance to win. To facilitate those who may have to miss one event, the best four results will count for points.
The first race will be an individual time trial to measure the young cyclist’s abilities, and the following five weeks will be time handicapped road races. The first race is next Monday evening in Faugheen, with registration at 7.00 pm sharp and racing beginning at 7.15. Each week the racing will be finished at approximately 8.00pm.
Thanks to the support of South Tipperary Sports Partnership and O’Ceallacháin’s Bistro, entry to the league is free, so all is needed is a roadworthy bike and a cycling helmet. Carrick Wheelers also have a limited number of racing bikes which can be loaned to promising young cyclists if they show a genuine interest in racing.
