The penultimate round of the Ó Ceallachains Cycling League was once again a battle against the conditions in Faugheen. Heavy rain had eased somewhat, but it was still a wet evening. However, that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm shown by the cyclists who competed in the separate one and three lap races.
In the overall standings, Conroy’s win has cemented his position at the top of the leaderboard with 70 points, with Elizabeth Moloney second on 70 points. With the best four performances counting for the final classification, the calculators will be out in force next Monday. Sean Hahessy and Michael O’ Loughlin started ten and a half minutes behind the first riders in the three lap event. They shared the workload evenly and picked off riders one by one until they made it to the front. The presence of an oncoming car at the wrong moment prevented O’ Loughlin from sprinting, allowing Hahessy a well deserved victory. This win has moved Hahessy to the top of the leaderboard on 64 points, with a nine point gap to Tomás Lacey, followed by Kyle Crotty, Aaron Kearney and Scott Bennett. However, Clodagh O’ Donnell, who missed Monday’s race due to the mini-marathon and Michael O’ Loughlin who also missed an earlier round can come back in the reckoning, as everybody’s worst result is omitted from the final calculations. So, on Monday night, Neil O’ Callaghan from Ó Ceallachains will be in Faugheen to present the prizes to all of the young cyclists who have put in a great effort over the last 6 weeks. Our final event this year coincides with National Bike Week. With the talent on show in Faugheen, it is clear that Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers will continue to be a force to be reckoned with well into the next decade.
