A cloud of sadness descended on the club today when the shock news of the death of Pat Nugent swept around the town.
Pat’s involvement in cycling began in the 1970’s, and he joined our club in 1981. His love of driving (fast) saw him transporting riders all over Ireland and beyond for over 20 years. His Ford Capri and Ford Escort were loaded up with a roofrack of bikes on many a Sunday morning. But it was his souped up Opel Manta that earned him the nickname ‘The Manta Man’, which survives to this day.
Always willing to help out young riders, Pat managed the club’s team in the 1985 Junior Tour of Ireland. In latter years, Pat was the club’s Chief Steward . In the photograph above by Joe Cashin, Pat has the Safety Statement for our race on St. Patrick’s Day 2009 in hand.
To Pat’s family and friends, we extend our deepest sympathies. We will update this with Pat’s funeral arrangements when we become aware of them.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
