By September 27, 2011 Club News

Carrick Wheelers rider Paul Flynn enjoyed the form of his cycling career this summer as he notched up 3 wins as well as an impressive 4th placing on the final stage of The Suir Valley International 3 Day.

Early on in the 2011 cycling season, Flynn’s form suggested that his first win as a member of the famous Carrick Wheelers Club was on the horizon, and as spring turned to summer, the Portlaw Powerhouse claimed a well-deserved win as he sprinted to victory in the Mark Hayden Memorial 3rd Cat. Race promoted by Carlow CC in the small town of Kildavin.

Flynn then brought this superb form to The Suir Valley International 3 Day, one of Ireland’s biggest event’s that attracts the best riders from Ireland and the UK, among other countries, as well as professionals from Ireland’s only pro squad The An Post Sean Kelly Team.  Flynn rode well throughout this 3 Day stage race but the icing on the cake was his 4th place on the Final Stage’s bunch sprint into Clonmel.  This was a truly amazing performance considering the high-class field the event attracts.

The Carrick Wheelers man continued to enjoy this purple patch of form as he went onto claim his second win of the season when he was again best of the field in the 3rd Cat. Dan O’Donovan Memorial Race held in Fermoy.  Flynn again used his Mark Cavendish like finishing speed to sprint to an impressive victory and cross the finishing line with his arms aloft for the second time this summer.

Finally, Flynn was rewarded with another winner’s title as the summer drew to a close as he claimed the 2011 Altitude Summer Cycling League promoted by Waterford’s Comeragh CC.  This summer racing league is run on a points basis over a ten week period from May to July.  The Portlaw man was again the deserving winner of this event as he enjoyed many Top 5 placings, including victories, on the speedy Carroll’s Cross circuit, adding his name to a winners list that includes top local riders such as Martin O’Loughlin and Robin Kelly who have won the event in recent years.

So, after a string of successful results this season Flynn was rewarded with promotion into the higher ranks of racing and on the evidence seen this year the Carrick Wheelers clubman can be confident of achieving further success in the 2012 season!
