36 young cyclists signed on for consecutive weeks in the Ó Ceallacháins Youth Cycling League held in the village of Faugheen. The annual event promoted by Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers has gone from strength to strength.
Week 3 saw Conor McGrath from Carrick-on-Suir leading from start to finish in the 3 lap event. A hot chase was on behind with Clonmel’s Aaron Aylward edging out Darragh Whelan from Carrickbeg in the battle for the remaining podium places. A furious sprint for fourth place was won by Gavin Redmond from Isaac Fenlon and James Nugent.
In the single lap event, our 2011 winner Luke Dunne showed that he is a force to be reckoned with again this year when he came in to win by more than 20 seconds. The handicapper got it right with only 2 seconds separating the next five riders. Daire Murphy got the verdict in a photo finish, ahead of Lee Ryan, Mikey McHale, Zara Galvin and Róisín Dunphy.
In the 3 lap overall standings, Conor McGrath’s victory puts him into a clear lead on 95 points, with Darragh Whelan second on 85, Thomas Parle on 81 and Slieverue’s Sam Hartley on 80. We have a tie at the top of the single lap leaderboard with Kilsheelan’s Mikey McHale and Luke Conroy from Clonmel on 86 points with daire Murphy a single point behind. However, with 50 points for a win, all of this can change in the coming weeks.
All of the cyclists were delighted to discover that the league will again be supported by South Tipperary County Council and the South Tipperary Sports Partnership as we have an event during National Bike Week. With the O’ Callaghan family sponsoring the prizes, no young boy or girl will go home empty handed. Many thanks to all.
