Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers for the second year running have produced the winner of the Munster Time Trial Championships as Michael Lucey made it two-in-a-row for the well-known Carrick-on-Suir Cycling Club in Limerick last week.
Lucey blitzed around the 40km route, between Adare and Rathkeale, in a course record time of 54mins 36secs to claim the gold medal in the event beating last year’s winner, Hugh Mulhearne, also of Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers, into second spot. Mulhearne trailed Lucey by a slender 26secs in the event, with Stephen Clancy of the Dan Morrissey-Speedy Spokes Cork team a further 2mins back, in the bronze medal position. Lucy is a former Junior All-Ireland Road Race Champion and a Kerry native, but rides with Carrick Wheelers since making his competitive return to the sport for the 2012 season.
Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers’ medal haul continued through the weekend as Martin Mizgajski claimed the bronze medal in the Leinster Road Race Championships held in Enniscorthy. Even though Mizgajski races with Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers, a cycling club registered with the Munster Council, he was entitled to compete in the Leinster Championships as he resides in the province.
Mizgajski was part of a large 12man break-away group containing many of the favourites that went clear of the main field midway though the race. This group stayed largely together until the uphill finish where Mizgajski put his impressive power to good use in the final few hundred metres to finish an excellent third place and collect a valuable provincial medal.
Both Lucey and Mizgajski clearly have benefited from their participation in the professional 8-day bike race The An Post Rás, which they competed in as part of the Tipperary Iverk Produce Team earlier this summer, and they are in good shape for some more impressive results before the 2012 season concludes.
