Dan Morrisey Carrick Wheelers summer winning streak continued this weekend as Sean McIlroy claimed top prize in the Kay Stratton Memorial promoted by Blarney Cycling Club.
Sean made his move half way through the 66km race route, which consisted of 6 laps of a very testing and technical 11km circuit. With the field altogether he attacked on the circuit’s most difficult section instigating the winning breakaway. The Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers rider was then joined by some of the country’s top veterans and these experienced riders quickly got organised, immediately opening up an advantage on the main bunch. Heading out on the final lap it was clear that the winning rider would come from this leading 8-man breakaway as it surely did. Again choosing his moment perfectly on the circuit’s most difficult section, Sean made his winning assault as he rode strongly away from his companions, soloing impressively to victory to claim his first win of 2009.
******The Shannon man’s victory in this tourist town that has long been associated with cycling makes it 5 wins from 3 weekends for the club in July, further strengthening Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers’ position as one of Ireland‘s top cycling clubs.
