Lacey and Conroy Lead The Way
The Laceys from Carrick-on-Suir are well known around Ireland for their prowess in the boxing ring with numerous All-Ireland titles to their name. However, the latest Lacey to make the headlines is 13 year old Tomás Lacey from Deerpark who showed drive and determination to win the beginners and underage cycling league in Faugheen this week. Once again, 24 cyclists turned out to race in the event sponsored by Ó Ceallacháins and supported by the South Tipperary Sports Partnership. With two separate events run over one and three laps of the famous ‘Faugheen 50’ circuit, handicapper Bobby Power of Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers has the knack of ensuring that there will be some close finishes and on Monday night this was certainly the case. Jack Conroy from Clonmel was first home in the one lap event ahead of Carrick girls Elizabeth Moloney and Niamh O’ Loughlin. Killian McHale, Andrew Butler and Annie Dowling were next to finish. In the three lap event, Clodagh O’ Donnell led the way for 90% of the race. However, the stamina of Tomás Lacey came into play on the last lap and he forged ahead to win by 14 seconds. Conor Power got the better of Richard Dunphy in the sprint for third place. Eoin Smith had a nose to nose fight with Scott Bennett all the way to the line, before finally getting the verdict for fifth place. Each week, the times of the individual riders are recorded with the handicaps adjusted for the following week. With races running on each Monday night up to our finale on the Monday of National bike Week (Sunday 13th – Sunday 20th of June), any of the 24 riders, or even a newcomer could emerge as the overall winner. So at 7pm on Monday nights, Faugheen is the place to be!
